'Song to the Siren' - just takes my breath away...

I have just watched 'The Lovely Bones' for the first time on TV. For me, it was just scary enough to make me jump, emotional enough without falling into sentimental slush (despite what the critics say) and the violent murder was not portrayed on screen but left to my imagination.

What made it special for me was the music - unexpectedly slipping into 'Song to the Siren'. This piece of music was written originally by Tim Buckley - and I am a fan of his and his son Jeff, but back in the 1980s, a version by This Mortal Coil was released which is very different but so magical it takes my breath away when I think of it. I have never heard it on TV nor the radio since it was released - of course I have ripped it off the internet, in all its various versions - but hearing it tonight was SO unexpected, if I had known, I would have rushed out and bought the DVD of the film just to listen to it.

You can hear it on this link here (blogger finally working OK)

  1. I followed the link and am so pleased I did,it is a hauntingly beautiful song. I'm going to be dreadful and do the "I prefered the book to the film" thing but mainly because I didn't like the portrayal of the afterlife in the film. If a book really moves you, I suppose you build up your own internal pictures and no film can match those. Thank for your kind comments about my travelling daughter! I'm not sure how far south they are going, but what a lovely thought, your son and the three of them making music in the sunshine!Jane x

  2. I am a little ashamed that I haven't read the book yet, although I have sold a couple of copies. I did read the first half of 'The Almost Moon' by Alice Sebold about a woman who murders her mother, but at the time, my mother was terminally ill and I just couldn't finish it although I might go back to it in the future. I find that the book is always superior to the film, with just a few exceptions eg 'The Godfather' and possibly 'Cold Mountain' both of which were good films in my opinion, but of course the book allows the imagination to run its course. My problem these days is staying awake long enough to watch a film or reading late!
