French bolster covers, in white or striped ticking

All white items sold

White is always so difficult to photograph, but here is a single-bed size bolster cover, also perfectly suitable for bolster cushions for day-beds, sofas etc. In pure cotton, there is a simple buttoned fastening.

This is the larger double-bed size striped bolster cover.

When we first visited France many, many years ago and stayed in a little hotel, I remember being intrigued by the pillows on the bed.

In Britain, the norm is to have one or two rectangular pillows for the head.

In France, the traditional way, is a long sausage-shaped bolster, or traversin, usually in striped ticking, which is placed on the head of the bed over the sheet, and the sheet is then pulled round over the pillow and tucked in. On top of this is placed one or two SQUARE pillows, not rectangular.

I was lucky enough to buy some old but unused stock from a closed-down mercerie and included in this were striped ticking bolster covers for a double bed - see the listing here, and a few single-bed white covers here - also suitable for a day bed or sofa.

At home, we actually have a mixture of both - the striped bolster under the head, with a heavy linen sheet pulled round it and tucked in, with several rectangular pillows - in my case FOUR - yes, I know it's a lot but I do a lot of reading, and like to be propped up!
